LIVECODING

Livecoding is the act of spontaneously creating something using a programming language or similar sort of thing, in front of an audience. At least, that's what I would call it, off the top of my head.

Demoscene has its own favourite approaches to livecoding, Bonzomatic is like a Writing 3D graphics in a fragment shader is a niche art, like matchstick sculpting or building a fully working Igor on a stone slab in a gothic castle. Probably more like the latter in fact, because it involves taking a handful of domain-specific knowledge and using it in a way it was not originally intended for. It also scares the villagers, and requires a frankly embarrassing amount of electricity to power the equipment. But for all that, it's not such a dark art that there aren't great people doing it. I use it to create the things that live in my imagination, to give shout-outs and represent parties, and sometimes just to doodle too, and let the subconscious mind flow.

This page is about my own livecoding work, head over to Creative Community if you're interested in playing in our Monday night jams!

If that seems too spooky for you, why not consider the peaceful world of TIC-80, a platform that is literally designed to be fun to make nice things for. Back in late 2021, I wrote an FFT extension for TIC-80, which meant we could write effects that respond to music, and that's been a big part of the stuff I write about in the community section.

All artwork my own, except for permitted reuse of the Sessions logo. Apologies for only including still images... we're working on that!
